How much does AI customer support cost in 2026?

A side-by-side look at what AI customer support really costs: a team of people, AI inside Intercom or Zendesk, or a managed AI agent, using published 2026 prices.

Comparison of monthly AI customer support costs for 2,000 conversations

If you’re pricing AI customer support for the first time, the quotes look impossible to compare. One vendor charges per resolved conversation, another per agent seat, another a flat monthly fee. This guide puts them side by side using published prices, so you can work out what your own volume will cost.

There are three ways to pay for support today: people, AI that charges per resolution inside a helpdesk, and a managed AI service on a flat fee. Most businesses end up with a mix, so it helps to know what each one really costs.

What per-resolution AI support charges

Price for each conversation the AI resolves, before the seats you also pay for.

Intercom Finper resolved conversation$0.99
Zendesk AI agentsper resolution, committed plan$1.50
Zendesk AI agentsper resolution, pay as you go$2.00

Intercom seats

$29 to $139 per agent per month

Zendesk seats

For example Suite Professional at $115 per agent per month

Prices as quoted in our 2026 cost guidefyxoai.com

Option 1: a support team of people

In the United States the median pay for a customer service representative was $21.53 an hour, or $44,770 a year, in May 2025 (US Bureau of Labor Statistics). That’s salary only, before taxes, benefits, software and training.

The bigger cost is coverage. A week has 168 hours, and one full-time person works about 40 of them. Answering customers around the clock takes roughly four people, which puts salaries alone at about $15,700 a month in the US. In India or the Philippines the salary is lower, but the four-shift problem is the same.

People are still the right choice for complaints, refunds that need judgment, and anything sensitive. They’re an expensive way to answer “Where is my order?” at 3 a.m.

Option 2: AI inside your helpdesk, paid per resolution

The big helpdesks now sell AI agents that charge each time the AI resolves a conversation:

  • Intercom Fin charges $0.99 per resolved conversation, on top of Intercom seats from $29 to $139 per agent per month.
  • Zendesk AI agents charge $1.50 per automated resolution on a committed plan, or $2.00 pay-as-you-go, on top of seats such as Suite Professional at $115 per agent per month.

Take a business with 2,000 customer conversations a month where the AI resolves 70%. That’s 1,400 resolutions. On Intercom it comes to about $1,386 plus seats, roughly $1,640 a month with three agents. On Zendesk it’s about $2,100 plus seats, roughly $2,450 a month.

These are good prices if you already run that helpdesk and have someone to set it up. What the per-resolution price leaves out:

  • Your team writes and maintains the knowledge the AI answers from.
  • Your team builds the hand-over rules and tests them.
  • WhatsApp, SMS and phone channels usually cost extra, and Meta now charges for WhatsApp replies (more on that below).
  • The bill grows with every busy month, because each resolution is charged.

Option 3: a managed AI agent on a flat monthly fee

A managed service builds the agent for you, connects your channels, writes the rules, tests it and keeps it accurate. You pay one monthly price whatever your volume.

Fyxo AI is one example, so here are our prices to compare: $2,000 a month for email and website chat up to 500 conversations, $5,000 for every messaging channel with unlimited conversations, and $10,000 when you add an AI voice agent that answers your phone. Setup, training, testing and weekly reports are included, and there’s a free two-week pilot.

On pure price per conversation, a helpdesk add-on is cheaper if you have the people to run it. A managed service makes sense when you don’t have a support operations person, you need WhatsApp or voice, or you want one fixed number in the budget.

The costs most quotes leave out

WhatsApp messages

Since 1 October 2026 Meta charges for replies sent inside WhatsApp’s 24-hour customer service window. Each business number gets 1,000 free service messages a month, then every delivered reply is charged at the rate for the customer’s country. If WhatsApp is your main channel, ask every vendor who pays this bill.

Setup and upkeep time

An AI agent is only as good as the content behind it. Someone has to connect your website and documents, write fixed answers for refunds and prices, decide what goes to a person, and fix the gaps the AI reports each week. With a helpdesk add-on that’s your team. With a managed service it’s the vendor.

Phone calls

Voice is usually priced separately, per minute, plus a phone number. If many customers still call you, include it from the start.

How to work out your own number

  1. Count last month’s support conversations across every channel.
  2. Read a sample of 100 of them and count how many are repeat questions: order status, opening hours, prices, bookings, policies.
  3. Multiply that share by the per-resolution price for helpdesk options, then add seats and channel fees.
  4. Add the hours your team would spend on setup and weekly upkeep, at their real hourly cost.
  5. Compare that total with flat-fee quotes, and with what a 24/7 team would cost you.

If the numbers are close, run a trial on your own questions before deciding. Real conversations show the true automation rate much better than any vendor’s average.
